Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start using NetTop?
Open NetTop once. It appears in your menu bar with your live upload and download speed; there is no Dock window to open. Click the speeds to open the panel. You can turn on Launch at Login in the settings so NetTop is always there.
I can't see NetTop in the menu bar.
On a MacBook with a notch, a full menu bar can push items behind the notch. NetTop notices this and tells you. Open NetTop again from Spotlight or Launchpad and the panel opens at the top of the screen. To make room, remove or rearrange other menu bar items by holding Command and dragging them.
How do I see which app is using my connection?
Click the speeds in the menu bar. The panel lists the apps using your connection right now, each with its own download and upload speed. With Group by App on (the default), helper processes are listed under the app that started them; click the arrow next to a group to see each process.
How does NetTop count my data usage?
NetTop counts the traffic of your Mac's own network link, Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a phone's hotspot, and keeps each network apart. History is kept hour by hour and day by day, and per app. By default it counts internet traffic only; turn on Include Local Network Traffic in the settings to also count traffic inside your home or office network.
Why can per-app numbers add up to less than the network total?
NetTop reads per-app traffic from the connections that are open when it looks. Very short connections and processes that start and quit in between can be missed, so the network total is the exact figure and the per-app list shows where most of it went.
How do data limits work?
Open the usage panel and set a limit for the network you are on: monthly, daily or a pass, with your own reset day. NetTop notifies you at 80% and at 100%. Limits count internet traffic only.
Why did the menu bar speeds turn orange?
Your Mac is connected to a phone's hotspot. NetTop turns its menu bar speeds orange so you know you are using mobile data.
What is Count?
Count measures the data used from the moment you start it, for a trip, a project or a hotel stay. You can undo or restart it in one click and export it as CSV.
How does the speed test work?
The speed test runs only when you start it, in the panel next to the list. It measures download, upload, ping and jitter using Cloudflare's public speed test servers. A test transfers a large amount of data, so keep that in mind on a hotspot or a metered plan.
How do I export my usage?
In the usage panel choose Export to save a PDF report or a CSV file. NetTop can also prepare a weekly and a monthly report and let you know when one is ready.
What is NetTop Pro, and how do I restore it?
NetTop Pro comes as Lifetime, a one-time purchase, or Yearly, an auto-renewing subscription. If you reinstall NetTop or use a new Mac, open the NetTop Pro window and choose Restore purchase, signed in with the same Apple Account.
Does NetTop collect my data?
No. Your usage history is stored only on your Mac, and NetTop has no account, no analytics and no ads. A few features contact outside services to work, such as the speed test and showing your public IP address; the Privacy Policy lists each one.
How do I delete my usage history?
In the settings, open Networks. You can remove one network with its history, or remove all data. Deleting the app also deletes its data.
Which macOS versions are supported?
NetTop runs on macOS 10.14 Mojave and later. The speed test gauge needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
